Time to Step It Up!
Earn college credits while still in high school! What a smart move taking college classes in high school is! Hundreds of high school juniors and seniors are now earning college credits while still in high school, saving the cost of tuition and saving time by getting ahead in college credits. The classes are FREE to students; the high school pays the tuition, fees, and textbook costs! Taking college classes while in high school also allows students to explore an academic or career field, as well as getting an idea of what college coursework will be like.
In 2007-08, 1,033 students in area high schools enrolled in dual credit classes. Total credit hours was 7,836. These credits would have cost students (and parents!) $877,632 if they took those classes in college! Iowa Valley Community College District's three campuses, Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Marshalltown Community College and Iowa Valley Grinnell, partner with these high schools to offer college credit: Ackley/Geneva BCLUW Brooklyn/Guernsey/Malcom East Marshall Gladbrook-Reinbeck Green Mountain/Garwin Grinnell/Newburg Iowa Falls/Alden Lynnville-Sully Marshalltown Montezuma North Mahaska South Hardin (Eldora/New Providence/Hubbard/Radcliffe) South Tama Tri-County Wellsburg/Steamboat Rock West Marshall There are four ways students can earn free college credit:
Planning ahead as a high school freshman will allow the best and most flexible scheduling options. Generally, if a high school student has taken all the available related coursework, the high school will allow the student to enroll in a dual credit course. The student must be a high school junior or senior. It's important to know that the high school will often approve a college course not offered by the high school.
