Marshalltown Schools by Donna Walker – Marshalltown Community School District will provide a speaker or a team of speakers to present information about Marshalltown's public schools. Administrators, principals, teachers, or school board members may be available. Possible topics of interest are Reading Proficiency: A Must-Have Skill for Each Marshalltown Student; Inquiry Based Learning for Middle Schoolers: Increasing Student Achievement Regardless of Academic, Ethnic or Socioeconomic Differences; Elementary School Counselors: Why do we need them?; Transitioning to a New Grade Structure in 2005-06: Miller, Lenihan and the 5-6, 7-8 Reorganization; Update on School Facilities Improvements; and Woodbury Elementary’s Two-Way Bilingual Program.
Music Advocacy: The Amazing Benefits of Music Education and the Efforts of Marshalltown Youth Foundation’s Musical Instrument Lending Library by Betsy Macke & Carrie Barr – The Marshalltown Youth Foundation has developed a Musical Instrument Lending Library for families whose budget would not otherwise allow students to participate in Marshalltown’s fine band program. Research shows amazingly positive results of music education! This PowerPoint show highlights some of the encouraging research that spurred the Marshalltown Youth Foundation to help.
Open Door, Open Mind by Dr. Laura Browne – Laura will explain the role of developmental education in Iowa’s community colleges. She will focus in particular on how Iowa Valley Community College District meets the needs of under-prepared and unprepared students whose employment aspirations require a college education. New Title III funding has provided Iowa Valley with additional resources to help all students make a successful transition from high school or the work world to the college environment (new ASSIST programs are in place at ECC, MCC and Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell).
The Buck Stops Here by Tim Wynes – As chancellor of Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Tim will talk about Iowa’s community colleges in general, Iowa Valley in particular, current legislative issues affecting education, or related topics of interest to the audience.
The Changing Face of Higher Education by Dr. Laura Browne – This presentation will explain how Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) meets the needs of an increasingly diverse student population.
