IVCCD Board reorganizes, Conrad Dejardin continues as Board President

MARSHALLTOWN – The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors reorganized on Oct. 8. The oath of office was administered to incumbents Ingvert Appel for District 2 and Paul Pohlson for District 7, and new director Deborah Jones for District 4. Conrad Dejardin, District 5, was re-elected as Board President. Larry Johnson, District 1, continues as vice president, with 22 years of service on the Board; he is the longest serving director of IVCCD. Also taking the oath of office were Barb Jennings, Board Secretary, and Dan Gillen, Board Treasurer.

The board approved a web redesign agreement with Stamats of Cedar Rapids for a comprehensive redesign of the district and unit websites. The IVCCD marketing office will work with Stamats for a goal of completion in April 2009 for a total cost of $122,655, divided over two fiscal years.

State Emergency Grants received for Lennox and ACE workers
The board approved several agreements with Iowa Workforce Development that included funding of State Emergency Grants for displaced workers at Lennox Manufacturing and ACE Precision Casting LLC, both in Marshalltown. Displaced workers will be eligible for retraining, and assistance with job searches, resume writing, interview preparation, etc. The SEG makes it possible for the qualifying workers to receive up to two years of training paid and an extension in unemployment benefits. Additional agreements for Promise Jobs and Workforce Investment Act Region 6 funding were also approved.

New contracts were issued to replace 28E Agreements for the shared position of health and safety manager and a sharing agreement with Region VI Planning Consortium. The new agreement with Stroh Corporation that added mechanical-electrical services on new equipment on the Marshalltown Community College campus and Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell was approved for $27,368. An agreement for online services for the Ellsworth Community College campus bookstore was approved.

The Board approved an agreement accepting the completion of the MCC Student Activity Center Project as of Oct. 8 with the official ribbon cutting on Oct. 13 and open for students on Oct. 14.

The Board also approved membership in Blackboard Connect Inc. to provide services for emergency e-mail, voice message, or text message alerts to those who choose to be notified. Jim Wilson, IVCCD Director of Technology Services, explained that students and staff will have the option to receive the alerts in the event of an emergency on the district wide campuses and the notification will also appear on the district/unit websites.

Changes noted in the IVCCD personnel report include hiring of: John McIntyre as MCC Director of Housing and assistant men’s basketball coach; Mary Thompson as ECC gym supervisor; Judy Freese as MCC assistant softball coach; Brian Bowles as MCC assistant baseball coach; Ronald Bayless as ECC assistant men’s basketball coach; Glennda Metzen as ECC Home Away from Home sponsor; Connie Gardalen as MCC college transition advisor; and Lisa Wiese as ECC college transition advisor. Sofia Zuluaga resigned as ECC assistant volleyball coach. Marcelo Serrano has accepted a full-time position as assistant housing director and success center assistant. Jon Nunez has accepted the position of IVCE assessment/retention specialist.

The IVCCD Board of Directors will meet on Oct. 15 for a Directors’ Retreat in Marshalltown at 5 p.m.
