Iowa Valley Board hires architect for MCC renovation
The IVCCD Board of Directors approved an agreement with Haila Architecture of Ames for a renovation of the Marshalltown Community College/Iowa Valley campus instructional areas involving the Health Occupations and Advanced Manufacturing programs. MCC Provost Robin Shaffer-Lilienthal said a timeline and more detailed plans for the construction will be presented this fall.
Construction on the MCC/Iowa Valley renovation project is expected to take place beginning in January 2014, with completion prior to the start of the 2014 fall academic semester. Funding for the project will come from the state ACE infrastructure allocation to the community college.
In personnel matters, the Board approved early retirement applications from Connie Adair, MCC English Professor; Janet Ekvall, MCC Nursing Professor; Marcia Hovinga, ECC Math Professor; and Duane Palcic, ECC Interim Director of Athletics & Student Life. It was noted that the four have served the community college district well for many years, and that they will be difficult to replace. They were thanked by the Board for their outstanding years of service.
The Iowa Valley Board approved a three-year contract with College Central Network Inc. to provide online career services to its students. According to MaryAnne Nickle, Dean of Iowa Valley Grinnell, the CCN program will allow students to post resumes and provide access to a variety of job search resources. Employers and local economic developers have requested this program because it will allow them to post jobs and more easily reach and recruit local community college graduates. The CCN services will cost $2,500 per year for each of the three years.
In other matters, the Board: approved an amendment to the District’s Promise Jobs Regional Agreement by adding $21,868 in funding; approved renewal of the 28E agreement with Solid Waste Management Commission of Marshall County (the 13th year for this partnership); approved an addendum to the MCC Construction Trades program’s agreement with Walter and Jan Wilkinson for some additional work; and approved its annual calendar of meetings for 2013-2014. A closed session was held to discuss collective bargaining strategy, but no action was taken upon returning to open session.
Two grants and three gift donations were accepted by the Board. The grants were $4,000 from the Community Foundation of Marshall County for a new Family Reading Circles program and $500 from the Hardin County Community Endowment Foundation for continuation of a Business To You series. The donations included a dividing head and milling machine valued at $2,000 given by Fisher Controls International to Marshalltown Community College, an athletic training table valued at $1,500 given by Toby Nicholson to MCC, and a hospital bed valued at $200 given by Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board of Directors will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, in the District Administration building in Marshalltown.
