IVCCD Bond Issue Update

IVCE Business & Technology Center

In the first of many celebrations for Iowa Valley Community College District, a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Business & Technology Center on the Marshalltown campus was held on March 25, 2008. This is the first completed project funded by IVCCD's 2006 bond issue.

Bettie Bolar, Vice Chancellor of Iowa Valley Continuing Education & Training, welcomed a large crowd of well-wishers that included members of the community; the Marshalltown Chamber Ambassadors; city and county officials; IVCCD Board of Directors, administration and staff. IVCCD Chancellor Tim Wynes thanked everyone for attending and noted the facility would be filled with students, utilizing the classrooms and welding lab immediately. He also recognized former Board Chairman Beryl Wellborn, noting that Mr. Wellborn supported the vision of growth for IVCCD for many years.

IVCCD Board Chairman Conrad Dejardin thanked the voters for passing the bond issue with 63% support and the YES Committee for its work. He said this facility will support three of the bond issue goals: 1) providing year-round education and training, 2) boosting local economic development, and 3) generating savings to high school students and their parents through the dual enrollment programs. “With the projected skilled workforce shortage, this facility gives IVCCD the capability to respond.”

Ken Anderson, Marshalltown Chamber President, noted how incredible it is to have this facility in the community, and that this project added to others in the community, brought nearly $80 million of new projects to Marshalltown, providing economic confidence in the future.

The $2.15 million Business & Technology Center, 102 College Drive, on the MCC campus, 3700 S. Center St., Marshalltown, is located just east of the Construction Technology building at the northeast corner of campus. The 12,200 sq. ft. building includes a 3,600 sq. ft. welding lab and student technology facilities. There are three classrooms, a 24-computer lab, offices for the IVCE technical training specialist and the director of safety training, and a 24-station welding lab. The facility has a hydronic geothermal heating and cooling system, and specialty air handling and exhaust systems needed for the welding lab. TSP, Inc. provided architectural services for the project that was built by Garling Construction, Inc. of Belle Plaine.
