iLearn with iPod®
Who can take advantage of iLearn with iPod? Any qualified student at Ellsworth Community College, Marshalltown Community College or Iowa Valley Grinnell who’s taking at least six credit hours per semester for at least two consecutive semesters will be offered the opportunity to lease an iPod after they register for classes.
What iPod is being offered? This fall we will be offering the 30 GB iPod1, also called the 5G iPod. It is capable of playing video or slides for those classes that have enhanced podcasts. For technical details, visit the Apple website: www.apple.com/ipod/
How much will it cost? The cost to lease an iPod will be $115 per semester for two semesters. At the end of the two semesters, students will be able to purchase the iPod for $20 and it’s theirs to keep. Otherwise it remains the property of the college and must be returned to the college.
How do I pay? The payment will be part of the student fees included on your college bill, which means you pay for it as part of your college costs. This allows you to use financial aid, including student loans, to cover the cost of the iPod lease or to use IVCCD’s payment plan to finance the lease over the course of a semester (see IVCCD’s payment plan policy for details).
Where do I get an iPod? The iPod will be available at a stand near the bookstores for the two weeks prior to classes and the first week of class. After that time, use the contact information at the bottom of this page.
What classes are going to use podcasting? From Anatomy to Word Processing, faculty members at MCC, ECC and Grinnellare adding classes all the time. Check in the Student Services officefor the latest list.
How will the iPod be used in class? How each course uses podcasting will depend upon the instructor teaching that class. The most prevalent use will be audio recordings of lectures; there will also be supplemental material and demonstrations available with some courses. New uses will constantly be developed with students’ help.
If I already own an iPod can I use it? Yes, you can use your current iPod. If you have an older iPod you may not be able to see video or slides in enhanced podcasts, depending on the model you have.
Do I have to have an iPod to get the podcasts? No, the podcasts will be available to anyone registered in podcast enhanced classes via iTunes U. You need a computer running a current version of Windows or Mac OS. You will also need to install iTunes available free from www.apple.com/itunes, and have a good internet connection. Because of the size of podcasts, dial-up is not recommended.
Do I have to have an iPod to be part of a podcast-enhanced class? No, the podcasts are available to any computer running a current version of iTunes with a high-speed internet connection.
What else can I use the iPod for? The iPod can be used as a portable computer hard drive and can also sync with your computer’s address book and calendar. In addition to course podcasts, there are podcasts available on thousands of topics from iTunes. And of course, you can put your music and videos on it… hey, it’s an iPod!
What if my iPod doesn’t work? The iPods are covered by Apple’s standard warranty. Warranty repairs will be handled through Apple directly. In addition to Apple’s coverage if your iPod is damaged, for a fee you can get a replacement through IVCCD Technology Services.
What if I drop out of classes? When you sign up for the program you are committing to a contract. If you drop out you will need to pay for the entire lease and buyout to keep the iPod or pay a lease termination fee.
What if I break it? The manufacturer’s warranty is in effect during the lease. If you break the iPod in a way that is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, the college will replace it for a $75 fee. If you lose your iPod you are still required to pay out the entire lease and the $20 buyout.
