ECC plans to Jam the Gym with high school seniors on Feb. 15
Ellsworth Community College invites all high school seniors to Jam the Gym on Saturday, Feb. 15, from noon to 5 pm. In addition to giving away several ECC scholarships during the women’s and men’s basketball games at 1 and 3 pm, volunteers will provide free assistance with financial aid forms from noon to 1 pm for all Iowa students and their families.
Participants should come to the Dale Howard Family Activity Center (1021 River Street in Iowa Falls) between noon and 1 pm on Feb. 15 to register for the scholarship giveaways and get financial aid help. The high school students will then receive free admission to the ECC home basketball games at 1 and 3 pm, when they’ll find out if their name is drawn to win one of the scholarships; winners must be present.
“Jam the Gym has become a great annual event,” says Adriane Gehl, ECC Director of Admissions. “Not only do students and families get free financial aid help before the game, but it’s a unique opportunity to win one of several ECC scholarships. The gym is always packed, and this year will be no exception. As an added bonus, both our men’s and women’s basketball teams are having great seasons, so we know these games against Southwestern Community College will be very exciting to watch!”
Volunteers will help students and their families fill out and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as part of a national program that helps students qualify for federal financial aid. The FAFSA, which is available in downloadable paper and electronic forms from the U.S. Department of Education, is the first step in the college financial aid qualification process.
“This program is great for anyone who has questions or wants free help with the FAFSA,” says Tara Miller, ECC Financial Aid Administrator. “It’s especially helpful for students who are low-income or are in the first generation of their families to attend college, or both. The financial aid help will be available until the start of the first basketball game at 1 pm.”
Students or parents may attend individually, but it’s best if the student and at least one parent or guardian come together. To complete the FAFSA, families should bring, for both the student and parent, the following:
- Social Security number, driver’s license number, and date of birth
- Most recent federal and state tax returns
- W-2 forms or other records of income earned last year
- Current bank statements and investment records
- Records of untaxed income received last year
- 2012 business and farm records
- Alien registration numbers (if not a U.S. citizen)
Students and parents may also register in advance for federal personal identification numbers (PINs) to electronically sign the forms and make future changes. To request a PIN, visit www.pin.ed.gov.
