Ellsworth Kids Football Camp is July 25-27

Ellsworth Community College's Panther Football coaching staff is hosting a summer football camp July 25-27 for kids in kindergarten through 8^th grade. The camp will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. each day at the College.

Ellsworth Community College will host two new female Youth for Understanding (YFU) international exchange students for the 2013-14 academic year. Jeongeun, 22, from South Korea, and Claudia, 18, from Switzerland, are both are in need of host families in the Iowa Falls area.

ECC announces Spring Term Dean's List

One hundred fifty-four students have been named to the Spring 2013 (January to May) Dean's List at Ellsworth Community College. To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have taken 12 or more credit hours during the semester (a full-time class load) and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average while attending ECC classes in Iowa Falls or online. Part-time students are not included on this list, and developmental courses do not count toward a student's GPA. The staff and administration congratulate these students for their academic excellence.

ECC women's basketball summer camp

The Ellsworth Community College Women's Basketball program will be holding a girls' basketball camp on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 17 - 19. The camp will be held at two different times during the three days. Grades 6 through 8 will meet from 8:30 to 11:30 am and grades 3 through 5 will meet from 12:30 to 3:30 pm.

Two Ellsworth Community College incoming freshmen have been awarded a prestigious ECC Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship for the 2013-14 academic year. Nathaniel Morgan of Larrabee, Iowa, and Garrett McNeely of Jamestown, Missouri, will each receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Baseball players give back to Iowa Falls

Several Ellsworth Community College baseball players and Coach Nate Forsyth spent time during Finals Week doing Spring yard trimming and cleanup for an Iowa Falls resident who needed help. Forsyth said the baseball team has done and will continue to do projects like this as a way of thanking and serving the community.

Lindsay Barnhart signs to play ECC softball

Lindsay Barnhart, an Iowa Falls-Alden High School pitcher/utility player, has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Ellsworth Community College. In her junior year, Barnhart had a .376 batting average and 20 stolen bases. She pitched 175 innings and had 170 strikeouts, with a 1.16 pitching ERA.

Tanner Lascheid picked for Belgium internship

Tanner Lascheid of Alden is the third Ellsworth Community College student to be selected for an eight-week summer internship in Brussells, Belgium, with Dr. Peter Jahr of the European Union. The day after ECC's commencement ceremony he'll fly from Des Moines to New Jersey to Brussells, returning to the U.S. on July 12. Although he's not exactly sure what he's getting into, he's looking forward to the experience.

The public is invited to ECC's 123^rd commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. at the Martin Ellsworth Dittmer Gymnasium on the Ellsworth Community College campus, 1100 College Ave. The ECC Class of 2013 includes 217 applicants for graduation, some of whom completed their coursework in December 2012, and others of whom may complete their coursework this summer.

ECC musicians deliver a great Spring Concert

ECC student juggles family, work and school to become a nurse

Ellsworth Community College student Katy Bown was a little girl when she saw her older sister being treated for thyroid cancer. Later, she was the one in the hospital having her kidney removed. From those experiences, she was awed and inspired by the doctors and nurses who took great care of them. That's when she decided nursing would be her future career.

Breanna Keane, an Iowa Falls-Alden High School senior, has signed a letter of intent to play softball at Ellsworth Community College. Keane had a batting average of 0.321 her junior year, with 36 hits, 6 doubles, and 27 RBIs. She was named First Team All-Conference for the IFA HS Cadets.

Joseph Gomer statue dedicated at ECC

An estimated 200 people attended the dedication ceremony this week for a new bronze statue honoring Major Joseph Philip Gomer on the Ellsworth Community College campus in Iowa Falls. Major Gomer, 92, participated via streaming video and cell phone from his residence in Duluth, MN.

Nate Forsyth is new ECC Athletic Director

It was announced today that Nate Forsyth has been named the new Ellsworth Community College Director of Athletics and Student Life; although an exact start date has not been determined, he will officially assume the duties of his new position within the next 60 days. Forsyth, currently ECC Admissions Counselor and Head Baseball Coach, was one of four finalists who interviewed last week with the search committee.

ICCAC announces new football scheduling

The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) have announced that they have agreed, in principle, to a football scheduling agreement. The initial agreement will be for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, but both entities envision the agreement evolving into a long-term alliance.

IVCCD moves forward with Internationalization Plan

Over the past several months, Iowa Valley Community College District has been exploring new ways to further its internationalization efforts to benefit Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Marshalltown Community College, and Iowa Valley Grinnell. An Internationalization Task Force, consisting of faculty, administration and staff from all campuses, has drafted a Comprehensive Internationalization Plan with strategies to enhance the international education opportunities for students. The plan includes developing education abroad opportunities for students and exchange opportunities for faculty, increasing the presence of international students and underrepresented minority students on the campuses, promoting cultural competency, and building a supportive and inclusive climate in which all faculty, staff, and students can thrive.

The Alpha Iota Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Ellsworth Community College inducted 11 new members this week. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. To qualify for membership, students must be in a degree-seeking program with a cumulative 3.5 grade point average, and have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Ellsworth Community College students Valerie Soesbe of Eldora and Fadya Hamad of Alden were honored as members of the 2013 All-Iowa Academic Team at a banquet held recently in Des Moines. The Iowa Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) sponsored the banquet. A maximum of two students per campus are nominated each year and are honored for their outstanding academic achievements and leadership by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. ECC hosts Gran Torino movie & discussion

Ellsworth Community College students and staff, as well as the general public, are invited to a free showing of the movie Gran Torino, starring Clint Eastwood, on Wednesday, Mar. 13, at 6:30 pm. The movie is a touching story of gang pressures, stereotypes, and a man who overcomes his prejudices. A discussion will be led by OJ Payne, ECC Director of Residence Life, held following the movie for those who wish to participate. The movie will be shown in Kruse Main Hall, Hamilton Auditorium, hosted by the ECC Diversity Committee.

Felicia Ledbetter never intended to go back to college after dropping out at age 20. Years later however, when the business she worked for was sold and her livelihood gone, she reconsidered. That decision has led her down an educational path she never dreamed possible, and it's propelling her toward a career of helping others that she can't wait to begin.
