Creative Retirement
The Creative Retirement program invites anyone of retirement age or who are retired to join this special group. The group programs many interesting and educational courses, lunch-n-speaker sessions, trips that vary in length. The following list of programs are for Creative Retirement members only unless stated otherwise. A special newsletter is sent to all members each quarter with more program information, so join now to get added to the mailing list. Call 752-4645 or 1-800-284-4823 for more information!

Creative Retirement Membership
Joining the Creative Retirement program will give you an opportunity to enjoy programs with your friends and to meet others with the same interest you have. The programs provided by Creative Retirement are educational, fun, updated information, and leisure events. There are trips to take for a day or several days. You will be glad to be a member, so you can enjoy time with others and to keep active in the community.

Fall Luncheon 2008
The Fall Luncheon is going to be a fun heal kicking and foot stomping event. It will be a special day to have a great meal, learn about the fall courses/trips, and to enjoy a great performance. The students of the Main Street Dance Academy will provide their special dances. Carolyn Hoffman is the Director for the academy and she will have dancers from 8 to 18 share their dancing talents. The group will perform a variety of dances--ballet, tap, jazz, and more. This will be a fun and informative day with your friends and an opportunity to meet new friends.

AARP Driver Safety
This is an opportunity to learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, rules of the road, and more. It will teach you how to adjust driving to age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time. Another benefit of this course may be an insurance discount. You need to check with your own auto insurance company. There will be no test, but full attendance of the all day class is required by AARP, to get your certificate. You do not need to be a member of Creative Retirement to attend this course, but you must pre-register and make your check out to AARP.

African Adventure
Take a trip to Africa, sitting in Marshalltown. Yes, Garry Brandenburg will take you on an adventure into Africa. He has made two trips to Africa and this will be a presentation on his second trip. The pictures will be wonderful and you will increase your tour log by adding Africa to the list.

Astronomy Seminar
Sam Wormley will focus this seminar on new discoveries in our Solar System, as well as a comprehensive overview concerning its structure and origin. Each course taught by him has been a great experience for the students. His information will get you thinking and add to your interest in astronomy. Sam Wormley is a former Iowa State professor and teaches at Marshalltown Community College.

Barn Tour
Enjoy a day away seeing some special Iowa Barns! The group will visit 3 barns on the way to Ames. A lunch will be enjoyed at a famous Ames restaurant, then a wonderful tour of the new ISU Dairy Barn. This will bring back memories, share a bit of history, and be a delight to visit the barns being preserved. Bill Stone will lead the group on this day away trip.

Chicago 2008
The annual trip to Chicago will once again stay at the famous Palmer House Hilton Hotel. The group will visit the Field museum of Natural History seeing the featured exhibit "Nature Unleashed" and "Aztecs". Enjoy shopping, theaters, and free time to tour. This is always a fun trip to just get away from the holiday rush. The trip is open to the public, call for more information.

Gems & Jewelry: History & Value
Vic Hellberg, fourth generation of one of Iowa's oldest jewelry stores, will present information on diamonds, gold and jewelry. Learn how diamonds are found, processed and used in the jewelry industry. Also, the discovery of gold, how it is brought to the surface and made into jewelry. Vic will use technology to bring this information to you and will bring tools of his trade to allow you to unlock  secrets of your jewelry. Hellberg's Jewelers was founded in 1898 and a recognized 100 year store with the National Association, Jewelers of America.

Going West to Omaha
A special adventure to Omaha to see the following places: Strategic Air and Space Museum, Henry Doorly Zoo, Joslyn Art Museum, Desoto National Wildlife Refuge Museum. If time permits stops will be made to Morman Trail Center, Boys Town Museum, Western Historic Trails Center, and Lewis & Clarke Trail Visitor Center. Lunch-n-Speaker: Identity Theft & Scams
Identity theft and scams are two of the fastest growing crime problems in America, especially the issue of identity theft. Just in Marshalltown over 100 cases were worked in 2007 and they directly can effect local residents particularly senior citizens. The presentation will cover what the crime is, how it is done, and what can we do to prevent it. Scams are often attempts to simply steal resources from unsuspecting people and seniors are often the target. Many of the common scams will be examined and we need to remember "the only free cheese is on the mousetrap".

Lunch-n-Speaker: Children In Poverty
Did you know that 1 out of every 6 children in America live in poverty? Or that a child in Iowa is born into poverty every two hours? Or that a child in Iowa dies before his first birthday every two days? Or that 68.2% of all elementary students in Marshalltown receive free or reduced priced meals due to their socio-economic condition? This presentation addresses poverty in Marshalltown, the county, and the state. The key concepts of living in poverty, hidden rules of economic classes, the registers of language and the impact of poverty upon schools and businesses will be shared.

This is a special musical program, part choral, part instrumental, featuring a group of 15 talented members of Tuesday Musical Club led by Kay Beach. A mixture of different of music, and part will be presented as a jazz program with piano, flute and clarinet.

Minneapolis 2008
Head to Minneapolis and take in a Twins game. They will play against the Seattle Mariners. Other attractions on this trip are: Performance of Little House on the Prairie at the Guthrie Theater, visit Historic Fort Snelling, visit the Minnesota Institute of Art, and a 3D show "Africa". Police Symposium
This will give you an overview of how the Marshalltown Police Department operates on a day to day basis within the City of Marshalltown. Some topics will include Drug Usage, Traffic Violations, Crime Intervention, Emergency Response, Defensive Driving and other related topics of interest. A designated member of the Marshalltown Police Department will lead the symposium under the guidance of Assistant Chief Jack McAllister.

Sustainable Agriculture
How important is soil and water conservation? Learn about Practical Farmers of Iowa, PFI, and organic agriculture. What determines our food costs at the grocery store? Find out the importance of the Leopold Center to agriculture. Jerry DeWitt, Director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture of Iowa State University will be the presenter on this interesting topic.

TimeSlips: Iowa Veterans Home
TimeSlips is a creative story telling process developed for individuals with mid- to later-stage dementia.  It awakens creativity and imagination and reaffirms their humanity as well as connecting with family and caregivers.  This special program is part of the benefits for individuals at the Iowa Veterans Home.  Two facilitators from the Iowa Veterans Home are going to tell the story of how TimeSlips has increased communication among the residents and staff.  They have a very interesting program to share.

Virtual Reality Applications Center
The Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC) is an interdisciplinary research center focusing on the rapidly expanding interface between humans and computers. Join the group going to Ames to visit the new Virtual Reality on the big screen in the ISU virtual theater at the Alliant Energy/Lee Liu auditorium in Howe Hall. The group will also tour another special attraction in the Ames area, as well as eat at one of the local restaurants. Call IVCE for more details.
