Spanish for Mission Teams

Intended Audience: Non-Spanish speaking service, volunteer or religious organizations traveling to Spanish-speaking countries.

Program Description: A comprehensive treatment of the language used by service, volunteer and religious organizations when bringing aid to Spanish-speaking countries. Focuses on construction, medical, dental, and ophthalmologic aid. The language component utilizes phonetic encoding to address the most important Spanish commands, questions and phrases pertinent to daily interactions. No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary.

Content: A 106-page manual and two accompanying CDs. Work-specific language sections include greetings and goodbyes, etiquette and social niceties, self identification, occupations, communication strategies, numbers, working with young children, traveling needs, construction, providing medical/dental/ophthalmologic services, physicians’ procedures, basic dental exam, pharmacy and dispensing medicines, and pharmacy terminology. Also covers common first and last Spanish names, the Spanish surname system, dates, telling time, measurements and fractions, metric equivalents, Spanish alphabet, colors, the human body glossary (interior and exterior), diseases/disorders/injuries/accidents glossary, conditions and symptoms glossary, operations and procedures glossary, common object charts, and places.

Objectives: To use Spanish to greet and compliment others; function in routine travel situations; provide basic medical, ophthalmologic, and dental services; assist in construction projects; dispense prescriptions; and give simple medication instructions.
