Gardening 101: Let's Eat!
GRINNELL – IVCE is offering an exciting interactive workshop for beginning gardeners! This course was originally planned for early February and was postponed. There is still time to register! “Gardening 101: Let's Eat!,” introduces essential concepts and designs for the home or school gardener. Before producing food, flowers and herbs, basic lessons in soil management are necessary. The class will focus on soil fertility, sun, air and water balance for seed germination, mapping/placement of plants, tools, tilling options, seasonal cycles, organic methods, thinning, weeding and mulching, fencing, rotations and harvest.
Instructor, Scott Koepke, is the coordinator of Soilmates, a garden education program from new Pioneer Co-op in Iowa City that focuses on the fundamentals of gardening, food origins, soil conditioning, composting and season extension. Koepke likes to say, “Food needs to eat before we can eat food!” Special emphasis will be on root dynamics, and building soil biology and organic matter through composting.
“Gardening 101: Let’s Eat,” course number HMG 3000 1005, will be held on Monday, February 18, 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Class will be located at Iowa Valley Grinnell, 123 6th Avenue West, Grinnell, room 209. Cost is $12.
