Swing dancing offered in Grinnell
GRINNELL – Swing dancing encompasses dozens of different styles and nearly a century of music. Iowa Valley Continuing Education is offering a series that will explore the very basics to get you on your feet. Get ready for an introduction to Lindy Hop, which will let you join in almost any swing dancing dance floor in Iowa. Prefer dancing solo? Need a new Zumba-style workout? Take the Charleston Cardio class and learn a swing dance that lets you move on your own without that pesky partner.
Intro to Lindy Hop, (REC 1053 002), is the most popular and common style of swing dancing today, and in this class you will learn this energetic partner-dance style from the beginning. The class will cover dance posture, footwork, the swing out (lindy’s basic step), and basic turns. Lindy hop is a great way to show off your style at weddings and dances of almost any type. No partner or previous experience necessary.
In the 1930s, clubs hosted Charleston dance marathons where people danced nonstop until the competitors dropped. The Charleston Workout, (REC 1053 003), takes a leaf out of their book with a cardio workout class designed around this famous jazz age dance. It’s Zumba, jazz style! Tone your body, learn to dance, and have fun. Charleston is a solo dance. No partner or previous experience necessary.
Dance instructor, Molly Rideout, has taught many types of swing dancing, including Lindy Hop, East Coast, and solo, partner, and twenties Charleston, in both group classes and private lessons.
Both 6 week classes start on Thursday, May 9. Lindy Hop will be from 6:15-7:15 pm and The Charleston Workout will be from 7:30 – 8:30 pm. Cost of each class is $49. All classes will be at Postels Community Health Park, 807 Broad St., Grinnell. Register by May 7, by contacting Iowa Valley Continuing Education at 1-800-284-4823 or 641-752-4645.
