Computer classes for seniors
GRINNELL – Iowa Valley Continuing Education is partnering with the Mayflower in Grinnell to offer an opportunity to learn new computer skills and build on skills you already have. Choose from one or take all of the nine great computer classes. All classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00 to 3:00 pm with the exception of the one-day classes.
Computers on the Brain, will combine information technology expertise with teaching experiences by instructor Sandy McAntire, to help you use technology as a tool to exercise your mind. This class is for anyone with a computer that wishes to maintain or increase their brain function. Hands on activities and examples are divided evenly between analytical and creative tasks. This class is offered in three difference sections, all from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on Mondays. CMP 1260 (1) is offered on May 12, CMP 1260 (2) June 30 and CMP August 11. The cost is $36 per section.
Computers 101, is a great foundation of information that everyone should be introduced to before they ever turn on a computer. This class includes what to look for when purchasing and train your brain exercises that will help you reduce the learning curve for any other future computing adventures. This course has one section, CMP 1261 (1). It is offered on May 19 and 21. Cost is $59.
Email 101, email has replaced faxes and letters as the preferred method of written communication. Explore the advantages of this efficient method of sending messages, pictures and other files or documents. Computers 101 is recommended. This course has one section, CMP 1262 (1). It is offered June 2 and 4. Cost is $59.
Digital Storage 101 is an introduction to the advantages and disadvantages of all types of digital storage including the cloud and beyond. This class covers backing up files and keeping all your digital information organized. Investigate current storage and transfer trends for your medical records and discuss security issues and preventative measures to keep your private information secure. Computers 101 is recommended. Register for course number CMP 1263 (1). This class is offered on June 9 and 11. Cost is $59.
Excel Basics, offers hands on experience and basic skills required to utilize the world's most popular spreadsheet software. Discover the powerful features that make Excel the premier number crunching go to for billions of users and the missing manual tools that make quick work of creating a useful spreadsheet to track expenses or investments. Computers 101 and Digital Storage are recommended. Register for class number CMP 1275 (1). This class is offered on June 16 and 18 at a cost of $69.
Excel Basics II, gives new life to your data by customizing charts and graphs or make your numbers divulge hidden secrets by plugging into pivot tables. CMP 1276 (1) will be offered on June 23 and 25 at a cost of $69.
Digital Pictures & Projects, experiments with the versatility of digital pictures and discover the variety of ways to incorporate them in projects on and off the computer. On the first day, discuss digital photography tips and design elements and show you how to change the focus of composition through cropping techniques. Bring your digital camera or camera phone with USB cord or picture card and reader. On the second day, utilize your images in a digital project and explore the array of projects that can be done. Course number CMP 1264 (1) is offered on July 21 and 23 for $59.
Get Social, receive an overview of the types of social sites and explore the top site in each category. Find out what you've been missing and get connected with like-minded people across the globe! Computers 101 is recommended. Course number CMP 1265 (1) is offered on July 28 at a cost of $36.
Get Mobile, covers a broad overview of e-readers, cell/smart phones, tablets, personal navigation devices, and personal safety devices. It also includes connectivity, communication, and subscription options as well as texting, touch screen, and keyboard type topics. Course number CMP 1266 (1) is offered on August 4 for $36.

All class will be held in the J&B Bistro located in Buckley Hall at the Mayflower Community Center, 616 Broad Street, Grinnell, IA. Use the Park Street entrance between 1st and 2nd Ave to access Buckley Hall. Parking is available along Park Street and on 2nd Ave between Park Street and Broad Street. PC laptops and learning materials will be provided. Each class will have a 10-minute break with coffee, cold drinks and cookies served.
