Kayaking Fundamentals I
GRINNELL – Looking for an exciting new hobby? Iowa Valley Continuing Education is offering "Kayaking Fundamentals I," Friday, June 13 from 1:00 to 6:30 pm.
Join Shireen Cave of CanoeSport Outfitters in Indianola for a half-day hands-on introduction to the sport of kayaking! The class will take place at Robert's Creek boat launch at Lake Red Rock, 1617 Fillmore Drive, Otley, IA. Meet at the east boat ramp off of Hwy G28. This course is for paddlers seeking their first instruction, or first-time kayakers looking to learn the basic skills. Discuss the basics of boat control, risk reduction, hazard identification, and other safe paddling practices. Learn how to perform a proper wet exit, as well as how to land and launch your kayak. Class also covers the fundamental strokes and proper technique to develop sound paddling habits. Lunch and beverages not provided. All other equipment will be provided by instructor. Students willreceive a call from the instructor the week before class to get approximateheight and weight to ensure correct kayak is available. Children age nine and up may take the class if with a registered adult. Bring a change of clothes and dress to get wet.
Instructor Shireen Cave is certified as a Level 2 Essentials of Kayaking Instructor and as a Level 2 Essentials of Stand Up Paddling Instructor both through the American Canoe Association. She currently helps out teaching many kayaking classes and enjoys bringing people into the sport of kayaking. She has delved into the sport of SUP (stand-up paddling) and is an instructor for basic skills as well as doing yoga on a board! During the summer you'll find her in the water atLake Ahquabi!
Register for Kayaking Fundamentals I, course number FUN 4500 (1) by Friday, June 6. Space is limited, so register early. The cost of the class is $59.
