"Preserve the Taste of Summer" with home preservation workshops
GRINNELL – Would you like to become an expert in home canning? Do you have a yen to preserve the delicious fruits and vegetables that have been growing in your garden this summer?
Sign up now for any or all of the four upcoming “Preserve the Taste of Summer” Saturday morning food preservation workshops offered this fall semester by Iowa Valley Continuing Education and the Poweshiek County Extension office. All workshops take place from 9 am to noon, at the Iowa Valley Grinnell campus, 123 6th Ave West. All food supplies and equipment provided. Bring your own apron.
The first Preserve the Taste of Summer workshop will be “Freezing & Water Bath Canning” on Saturday, Aug 31. Participants preserve jars of salsa and bring home a wealth of preservation instructions and recipes
The next workshop in the series, “Pickling,” will take place the following weekend on Saturday, Sept. 7. Participants will bring home their own jar of pickles, as well as many pickling recipes and instructions.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, “Pressure Canning,” will cover how to safely can vegetables, sauces, meats, and other low-acid foods. Participants will take home a jar of canned vegetables they have prepared themselves plus pressure canning recipes and instructions.
The final workshop in the Preserve the Taste of Summer series will be “Fruit Jams & Dehydration” on Saturday, October 12. Participants will taste home canned jams on fresh biscuits and bring home their own jar of jam. They will also taste snacks created using a food dehydrator and learn about what foods can be dehydrated.
These workshops will be taught by Iowa State University Extension Nutrition and Health program specialists Mary Krisco and Holly Van Heel. Anyone age 18 years or older may attend. Hands-on workshops require online registration, payment, and completion of four 30-minute online lessons before the workshop is held.
Participants will need to register with both ISU Extension and Iowa Valley Continuing Education.
