ESL classes offered in Iowa Falls
IOWA FALLS – English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for people who do not speak English as their first language will be offered at Ellsworth Community College, in the Trades and Industries building, room 104. Two different classes are available. Fall tuition is $25. The books cost $25.
In the multi-level ESL class, students will learn vocabulary, grammar, phonics, reading, writing, and speaking as they read books and newspapers, role play, participate in various group activities, use online resources, and talk about real-life scenarios. Sherilyn Hitch, English as a Second Language instructor for Iowa Valley Continuing Education, says, “Students need to have interesting activities to stay engaged and feel comfortable with what they are doing. ESL class needs to be fun because learning a new language is such hard work.” This class will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 4 and meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to noon.
Transitions is another class that is intended to expand a person’s skills so they are more ready for the workplace or further education. It will meet the needs of ESL and English speaking students who want to have more computer experience. Students will learn basic computer skills and use online programs and websites. Pre-GED math, reading, writing, social studies, and science will also be offered to those who are interested. Transitions class will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 3rd and meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to noon.
“Everyone is welcome to attend, no matter what their level of English proficiency is,” said Hitch. “We hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to become more computer literate and more comfortable speaking, reading, and writing English. Although Fall Term Orientation begins on September 3rd and 4th, new students can join the class at any time through May.”
