Fine Arts @
MCC!
Whether you are ‘art curious’, at the beginning stages of
artistic study or an advanced art major, the MCC Art Department will
help develop and enhance your knowledge, skills and confidence in the areas
of Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Design, and Photography (Computer Graphics
begins Spring 2003). Theoretical classes include Art Appreciation and Art
History.
Class
members may be art majors, or students who simply wish to try something new.
This results in a broad mix of ages, ideas, abilities, and personalities,
and classes that are stimulating, vibrant, and fun! For art majors, the MCC
Art Department provides the specific courses needed, while allowing the
student to fulfill requirements in English, Math, and Speech.
All students are exposed to the world of art through slide
lectures, demonstrations, lectures from visiting artists and field trips.
Beginning the first semester, students in the studio courses exhibit their
work in the Ray Frederick Gallery, (located on the MCC campus, Room 306),
and thus have the opportunity to see their work in a public and professional
setting.
In the advanced classes, individual direction is emphasized.
The second year art student receives support and instruction to further
define their own ‘artistic voice’.
Please visit, email or call. The world of ART awaits you!

Private
Music Lessons
Have you always wanted to learn how to play an instrument and
never had the courage to start? Or have you learned an instrument but put it
down long enough to forget a lot of what you learned? Then, it is time to sign
up for private music lessons at MCC. For one half-hour a week, you can introduce
yourself to an instrument or reacquaint yourself with a long lost one.
MCC offers a wide
variety of private music lessons, from piano to voice, to all of the woodwinds.
Prior experience is NOT necessary to register for this class. You meet privately
on a one-to-one basis for a half hour each week with instructor Meghan
Schumacker. Lesson times are arranged and sign-ups for times begin at the end of
each semester through the first week of the next. One of the course requirements
is to participate in the end-of-the-semester concert.
Private music lessons
will enhance your knowledge of an instrument, or initiate your beginning
interest in one. For a half-hour a week, you will grow to be a better musician
throughout the semester. Each student is required to memorize their piece of
music for the concert as well as introduce their piece and themselves. This
experience gives students a small glimpse of what professional performers have
to do all of the time.
Show Choir
From slow melodic tunes, to jazzy fast ones, the Show Choir’s
exceptional ability to be versatile pays off! Does the Show Choir have fun?
Every week they do! From warm-up to cool-down, the Show Choir enjoys preparing
for their end-of-the-semester concert!
The MCC Show Choir is open to all students
interested in vocal performance. Students need not enroll for the 1 credit hour
class, but it is strongly recommended. The Show Choir meets on Wednesdays from
4-5 pm.
The MCC choirs perform a variety of musical
styles and songs. Choreography is added to some of the songs, which provides a
nice flavor to the show.
In the past, the choir has performed at the Marshalltown Holiday Stroll, singing
Christmas Carols to the passers-by. Students also participate in the
end-of-the-semester concerts, singing a variety of challenging music, helps
promotes performance.
The students get a lot out of being part of
the Show Choir, including: learning about music, relating to different styles of
music, performing, growing as a group, and the importance of the independence of
parts.
Each semester the Show Choir has a theme for their end-of-the-semester music
concert. Some of the recent themes have been: Holidays, Broadway, Jazz and
Blues.
The Show Choir performs 3-5 songs per
concert. Select singers will also be part of small ensembles that perform.
Choreography is added to many of the songs. The Show Choir strives to express
the feelings of the songs they sing.
“I like the small class
sizes in music because it lets me have a more one-on-one experience. Because of
these smaller classes, I get a more personal education.”
