Human Services
Choose a career of service
If you want a career where you play an important role
helping people, the Human Services program at Marshalltown Community College may
be the perfect academic preparation for you.
You will be a highly marketable employee when you complete
MCC’s Human Services program.
You can choose an entry-level career located in a human
services agency, health care center, correctional or rehabilitation center,
school system, gerontology-centered organization, family therapy or counseling
center, or substance abuse treatment and prevention center.
Or you may choose to transfer to a four-year college or
university with a solid core of human services skills and education.
This service industry is one of the fastest growing career
areas in today’s society. And one of the most needed skills in human services
positions is compassion - a true sympathy for difficult life situations of
others. Jobs in human services are service oriented, involving care for and
helping people with special needs.
If you are a people person, someone who loves to work with
others, human services offers many rewarding career opportunities including:
child development workers with mentally retarded; youth service workers in
facilities for delinquent and dependent youth; residential staff in schools for
children with disabilities; education staff in facilities for disabled children;
and supervisors in career programs with adults with disabilities.

“I had no idea how valuable these classes were until I
started job hunting. Knowing all the programs so thoroughly really gave me an
edge. I found a job right away. I can’t
tell you how many times people ask me to help them with something computer
related. It gives me job security.”
