Human Services
Choose a career of
service
If you want a career where
you play an important role helping people, the Human Services program at
Marshalltown Community College may be the perfect academic preparation for you.
You will be a highly
marketable employee when you complete MCC’s Human Services program.
You can choose an entry-level
career located in a human services agency, health care center, correctional or
rehabilitation center, school system, gerontology-centered organization, family
therapy or counseling center, or substance abuse treatment and prevention
center.
Or you may choose to transfer
to a four-year college or university with a solid core of human services skills
and education.
This service industry is one
of the fastest growing career areas in today’s society. And one of the most
needed skills in human services positions is compassion - a true sympathy for
difficult life situations of others. Jobs in human services are service
oriented, involving care for and helping people with special needs.
If you are a people person,
someone who loves to work with others, human services offers many rewarding
career opportunities including: child development workers with mentally
retarded; youth service workers in facilities for delinquent and dependent
youth; residential staff in schools for children with disabilities; education
staff in facilities for disabled children; and supervisors in career programs
with adults with disabilities.

Career Options
With MCC’s Human Services
curriculum, you develop the solid academic background that makes your future
successful. Our courses prepare you to step right into an entry-level human
services position with knowledge that sets you apart from other applicants. You
will find that your education is relevant and applicable in the current job
market. Plus, you will have an internship in a human service agency - chosen by
you and your faculty advisor.
If you choose to continue
your education at a four-year school to earn a bachelor’s degree, you will be
ready for junior and senior level courses, and ahead of others because of your
hands-on practicum experience. Your internship gives you the opportunity to gain
a broad understanding of human services careers. Your experiences will help make
all of your future education “make sense.” You won’t go in feeling lost; you’ll
have the edge.
Degree Details
"I loved MCC as
a non-traditional student. The classes were small and I got to know the
instructors who were always available to help. Even now, years later, I come
back to MCC and people remember me. The professors take a personal interest in
your success and your future. MCC helped me by laying the foundation for
everything else I have done."
Rhonda Draisey graduate of MCC
Drake University and the University
of Wisconsin-Stout
Currently a rehabilitation counselor
for the State of Iowa
“I was a
transfer student to UNI from MCC and going to MCC first was one of the best
decisions I've made about college thus far. I knew that I was interested in the
social sciences right away which helped me focus on classes that would prepare
to transfer right into my major at UNI but if you're not sure what you like, MCC
is even more perfect.”
Lana Jenness
UNI student working on master’s
degree in social work
