February movies at the Orpheum Theater
The IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center, 220 E. Main St., will be showing four movies this February, each bringing something special to the table. This month brings you one of Hitchcock’s finest thrillers, a patriotic romance, and a “Claymation” adventure for the entire family.
Tickets are just $4 each; the box office opens one hour before show time. The concession stand offers popcorn and all your favorite sweets, plus the delicious Orpheum mini cookies.
This February starts off with the 1954 American suspense film, Rear Window , directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The film follows a wheelchair-bound photojournalist (Jimmy Stewart) and his beautiful fiancé (Grace Kelly) who spy on their neighbors and eventually witness a murder. Rear Window is considered by many critics and scholars to be one of Hitchcock’s best and is ranked 42 on AFI’s “100 Years…100 Movies” list. Showtimes are Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 pm; Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, Feb. 3, at 2 pm.
The second movie of the month is The American President , a 1995 romantic comedy-drama film starring Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, and Richard Dreyfuss. Widowed President Andrew Shepherd (Douglas) pursues a relationship with attractive environmental lobbyist (Bening) while at the same time attempting to win the passage of a crime control bill. Showtimes are Friday, Feb. 8, at 7 pm; Saturday, Feb. 9, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 pm.
The middle of the month brings you Chicken Run , a 2000 British stop-motion animation comedy about a band of chickens that seek a smooth-talking ‘Rhode Island Red’ named Rocky (Mel Gibson) as their only hope to escape from their certain death. Showtimes are Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 pm; Saturday, Feb. 16, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2 pm.
The final film of the month is Fried Green Tomatoes , a 1991 comedy-drama film based on the novel by Fannie Flagg. Starring Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates, the film tells a story of a housewife unhappy with her life who befriends a woman in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells. Showtimes are Friday, Feb. 22, at 7 pm; Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2 pm.
