MCC celebrates National Poetry Month at the Orpheum
Marshalltown Community College will celebrate National Poetry Month with a live reading at 7 pm on Thursday, April 24, at the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center. The reading will feature poetry from MCC students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Several members of the faculty, including math, computer science, environmental science, English, art, and business instructors, will be joined on stage by MCC Provost Robin Lilienthal and Chris Russell, Dean of Students & Academic Affairs, to present a rendition of his/her favorite poem.
Carolyn Briggs’ fall and spring creative writing classes will be reading their original work. “My students are writing mature and surprising work,” says Briggs. “Their poems are raw and honest, funny and insightful.”
The IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center Movie House is located at 220 E. Main St., Marshalltown. This poetry reading is free and the public is encouraged to attend. For questions, contact Carolyn Briggs at 641-844-5721 or Carolyn.Briggs@iavalley.edu.
Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.
