May movies at the Orpheum Theater
May is here and the Orpheum Theater Center has a new slate of movies for all to enjoy. This month brings you James Dean’s final film, another Disney classic, and a fresh take on a critically acclaimed sci-fi franchise. Stop on down to the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center, 220 E. Main St., to see what’s in store for you this month.
Tickets are just $4 each; the box office opens one hour before show time. The concession stand offers popcorn and all your favorite sweets, plus the delicious Orpheum mini cookies.
This weekend starts off with the 1956 American drama film, Giant , starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean. Giant was the last of James Dean’s three films as a leading actor, and earned him his second and last Academy Award nomination. Dean was killed in a car accident just before the film was released. Showtimes are Friday, May 3, at 7 pm; Saturday, May 4, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, May 5, at 2 pm.
The second movie of the month is Bedknobs & Broomsticks , a 1971 musical film produced by Walt Disney Productions that combines live action and animation. The film is frequently compared to Marry Poppins (1964) because of its use of animation and setting in London. Set during the 1940 London Blitz, Bedknobs & Broomsticks stars Angela Lansbury as Miss Price and David Tomlinson as Emelius. Showtimes are Friday, May 10, at 7 pm; Saturday, May 11, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, May 12, at 2 pm.
The middle of May brings you The Odd Life of Timothy Green, a 2012 American fantasy drama film directed by Peter Hedges. The film is about a magical young boy whose personality and innocence have profound effects on the people in his town. Showtimes are Friday, May 17, at 7 pm; Saturday, May 18, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, May 19, at 2 pm.
Star Trek (2009) is an American science fiction action film directed by J.J. Abrams. It is the eleventh film in the Star Trek franchise and features the main characters of the original Star Trek television series, portrayed by a new cast. The film follows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) aboard the USS Enterprise as they combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from their future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. Showtimes are Friday, May 24, at 7 pm; Saturday, May 25, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, May 26, at 2 pm.
The final film of the month is High Noon , a 1952 American Western film starring Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly. The film tells a story of a town marshal forced to face a gang of killers by himself. High Noon is ranked #27 on the American Film Institute’s (AFI) 2007 list of great films. Showtimes are Friday, May 31, at 7 pm; Saturday, June 1, at 2 pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, June 2, at 2 pm.
