MCC Phi Theta Kappa inducts new members
Thirty new members were inducted into Marshalltown Community College’s Alpha Iota Rho Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society of the two-year college on Oct. 23.
The Phi Theta Kappa organization recognizes academic achievement at the community college level. The MCC Chapter requires members to have completed at least 12 semester hours in a two-year degree program, be currently enrolled, attended the previous semester, and have a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Dr. Chris Russell, Dean of Students and Academic Affairs, welcomed guests and congratulated students for their accomplishments. MCC Provost Dr. Robin Lilienthal also congratulated the inductees and introduced English Professor P.J. Colbert for a message from the faculty.
The guest speaker was Sally Wilson, Professor of Biology at MCC. She talked about how ‘grit’ and ‘pluck’ are the keys to success in college and in the real world, and how research shows that community college students have more grit than the average student. “Studies show that community college graduates rate as high as PhD graduates when it comes to having grit.” She defined ‘grit’ as “sticking with things for the long term until you master them.” She also added that, “Of all the students I’ve taught over the years, I have enjoyed the community college students the most.”
Chapter President Cynthia Grimm conducted the ceremony with the assistance of chapter advisors Pele Waddilove and Renaie Hutzel. Waddilove and Hutzel met and congratulated each inductee on stage as they signed their name, received their PTK sash and lit their candle.
