Tritons End Tiger Volleyball Season
FORT DODGE, IA - Head Coach Chris Brees knew his Tiger volleyball team (14-25) would have to play an error free match in order to upend top seeded Iowa Central Community College (33-10) in the first round of the Region XI Tournament. The Tritons made sure that wouldn't happen, forcing MCC into 18 hitting errors and sweeping the Tigers (3-0), 25-11, 25-13, 25-19.
"Iowa Central is a team that is not going to give you many free chances," said head coach Chris Brees. "They forced us to make many out of system plays; we did not adapt and forced ourselves to make very tough hits."
Sophomore outside hitter Mady Van Metre (Marshalltown, IA) was the only Tiger to record double digits kills on the evening, a situation that Brees knew would not lead to much success. "We knew coming into the night that we couldn't rely on one hitter, we needed everyone to contribute tonight, and we didn't get that," commented Brees. "Our focus has been spreading the ball around to our entire offense, but that only goes so far if all hitters aren't producing when they get the set."
The Tigers were paced on defense by freshman libero Ashely Salgado's (Ottumwa, IA) 17 digs. Freshman Alyssa Whitmore (Le Grand, IA) chipped in 10 digs and 2 ace serves for the Tigers.
"This group has a lot to be proud of, and should hold their heads high," said Brees. "We were out manned in almost every match we played this season, but these kids played determined and never gave up. I will always remember this squad as the ones that started it all."
