Enrollment gains reported for MCC, ECC

IOWA FALLS – Increased enrollments, completion of Marshalltown Community College’s new William “Bill” Faust Student Union, and approval of a new Orpheum Coffee Shop vendor highlighted this month’s meeting of the Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors.

Districtwide, IVCCD fall term enrollments are up 4.35 percent in number of students and up 3.17 percent in total credit hours. At Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, there are 855 students (up 2.76 percent) taking 10,846.5 total credit hours (up 1.09 percent). At Marshalltown Community College, there are 2,022 students (up 5.04 percent) taking 17,664.5 total credit hours (up 4.49 percent).

Dr. Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor, gave credit to “our admissions, faculty and staff for all their hard work to grow our enrollments this fall. I’m very proud of how everyone stepped up to help our numbers rally back up.”

In other good news, the Board approved a certificate of substantial completion for MCC’s newly remodeled Faust Student Union, which will be celebrated with an open house on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 3:30 to 5 pm; there will be a brief program at 4:30 pm. MCC Provost Dr. Robin Lilienthal said the College is extremely grateful to William Faust for his gift, which allowed some incredible renovations and improvements to the MCC student union.

The Board also approved a two-year lease agreement with Denise Bacon, who will soon be operating Forget Me Not Bakery & Catering out of the Orpheum Theater Center coffee shop in downtown Marshalltown. She will announce an official opening date once she receives the required state licensures. Dr. Duree said the District is very excited to be working with Denise Bacon, and anticipates that she’ll have a strong customer base within a short period of time. He told the Board she has many years’ experience in the restaurant and catering business.

Other actions taken by the IVCCD Board include approval of:

  • an agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation to provide Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Skills Testing as a third-party tester through Iowa Valley Continuing Education;
  • agreements with AGWSR, BCLUW, Eldora-New Providence, Grinnell-Newburg, Hampton-Dumont, Iowa Falls-Alden and Montezuma School Districts whereby MCC and Ellsworth Community College provide college level instruction to their high school students;
  • updated Board policies regarding filling vacancies of Board members and reporting sexual and/or physical abuse of a child or dependent adult; and
  • an assignment of agreement for architectural services for the 2016 MCC Student Union renovation project necessitated by the sale of Haila Architecture/Structure/ Planning, Ltd., to CES, Ltd.

The Board received a variety of equipment donated by Alliant Energy, Mid-American and Black Hills Energy to the MCC Utility Technician and Natural Gas Technician programs, including a 2009 Chevrolet 3500 one-ton service truck.

With regard to workforce development, the IVCCD Board approved the Iowa Workforce Development Region 6 Grant Agreement for 2016-2017. The agreement provides Region 6 Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act budgets in the amounts of $27,768 for administration, $209,642 for youth services, $16,641 for adult services (July through September), and $23,644 for dislocated worker services (July through September). The Board also approved a lease agreement with Hawkeye Community College for leased space at the R.M. Wolfe Building.

The next meeting of the IVCCD Board of Directors will be Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 4 pm in the District Administration building on the Marshalltown campus.
