ECC students highlight campus activities
Friday / April 14, 2017
MARSHALLTOWN – The Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Board of Directors heard a report on student involvement in campus activities when it met this week at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. ECC Student Engagement & Athletic Coordinator Maurie Tomke and Student Senators Kelbey Barbadillo, Carlin Whelpley and Brooklyn Benning gave the presentation on student engagement at ECC.
Tomke outlined the college’s traditions, which include the Back to School Bash, Homecoming, Haunted Hallway, Christmas Dinner and the Honors Reception. He said areas in which the college would like to see growth in student engagement include weekly events, Panther Service Projects, clubs and organizations, and community outreach. ECC’s specific goals for the current and coming year include having 90 percent of students involved, establishing at least two new clubs or organizations (and sustaining them at least three years), and achieving 75 percent of their attendance goals for each ECC social event.
The student senators reviewed their activities for the year and ways in which they’re encouraging student involvement in campus events. Barbadillo said the Student Senate has more than doubled its membership since last year, and the group meets weekly. The Senate has met with Congressman Steve King, participated in the IACCT Legislative Leadership Day at the Des Moines, Capitol (where they met with Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds), and hosted a number of school and community service projects. They are currently surveying students for input into the calendar of student activities for 2017-18.
An $85,000 Industrial New Jobs Training Agreement with Iowa Steel Masters LLC of Ackley was approved by the Board. Iowa Steel Masters is a family-owned custom roll forming company that provides high quality steel panels, custom trim and accessories for residential, commercial and agricultural buildings. Jacque Goodman, Vice Chancellor of Continuing Education, said the company is a new economic development partner with Iowa Valley and that this training agreement is doubling the size of the business. “We are excited to see this project moving forward,” Goodman told the Board.
In other matters, the Board approved: a contract with Paycor for outsourcing payroll services, a resolution approving publication of notice and bidding procedures for the issuance of not to exceed $300,000 Industrial New Jobs Training Certificates, Spring 2017 graduation application lists for both Ellsworth Community College and Marshalltown Community College, payment of 2017-18 membership dues for the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), and revisions to two Board policies.
The Board accepted three gifts designated for the MCC Utility Technician program at Marshalltown Community College, including three climbing belts given by Cahoon Sales Inc., wooden poles given by Alliant Energy—IPL, and miscellaneous items given by Mid-American Energy. In addition, Jensen Inc. donated a transmission to the Iowa Valley Grinnell Automotive Technician program and Alliant Energy donated miscellaneous items to MCC’s Natural Gas Technician program.
The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board will be Wednesday, May 10, at 3:30 pm at the District Administration building, 3702 S. Center St., Marshalltown. There is a special Board meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, at 3 pm in Marshalltown, followed by a 4 pm Board retreat.
