MHS to construct a shelter at MCC cross country course
Friday / July 14, 2017
The Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Board of Directors approved an agreement for construction and maintenance of a 20’x24’ shelter to be located on the Marshalltown Community College campus near the cross country course when it met this month. The shelter will be funded, built and maintained by Marshalltown High School, which uses the course for its home cross country meets.
MCC Athletic Director Dr. Kathleen Brown told the Board that the project has been in the works for several years, but that funds and labor are now available. Once the concrete pad is poured, those doing the work said it should be a weekend project to raise the shelter. She added that there’s a pre-existing water source at the site, so water will be available, but not electricity. Current plans call for the structure to be in place in early August before the first home cross country event.
The Board also heard about plans for the July 19 Mass Casualty Training event that will take place on the MCC/Iowa Valley campus. With involvement from Marshall County Emergency Management Services, the Marshalltown Police and Fire Departments, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and area Emergency Medical personnel, the training will involve a simulated mass casualty on the campus, to which the above agencies will respond. Several MCC/Iowa Valley students and staff members will participate as observers and “injured” participants. The campus will close at noon that day, and no access will be allowed until the training exercise has concluded.
A gift of $1,000 was accepted from Church Women United of Iowa Falls, to be used for the Iowa Falls High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Dr. Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor, thanked the group for their “ongoing and invaluable support of our programs.”
In other matters, the Board approved: lease agreements with Iowa Falls School District for its use of Ellsworth Community College’s Trades & Industries building for Green Belt Alternative High School and for ECC’s use of school district athletic facilities; agreements with McFarland Clinic in Iowa Falls for nursing services and athletic trainer services at ECC; a second year lease agreement with Hawkeye Community College for space at the R.M. Wolfe Center; an extension and funding of $3,600 for on-the-job training through August in support of a dislocated worker at Brownells; and revisions to five personnel-related Board policies.
The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board will be Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 4 pm at the District Administration Building board room in Marshalltown.
