Larry Johnson named IVCCD Board President
Friday / October 13, 2017
The Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Board of Directors administered oaths of office to re-elected directors Delbert Kellogg of Marshalltown and Deb Jones of Clemons and newly-elected director Joanna Hofer of Toledo when it met this week. The Board then selected Larry Johnson of Iowa Falls as its new president and Paul Pohlson of Grinnell as vice president.
Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Dental Assisting Program Instructor/Coordinator Tammy Damman reported to the Board about her enrollments (currently one over capacity at 19 students), the curriculum, her students, and plans for fall and spring semesters. She touched on legislation that impacts her profession, the work of the Dental Assisting Advisory Committee, the program’s status and reporting requirements through the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), and new intra-oral camera equipment that she hopes to incorporate into the MCC curriculum.
Damman then introduced four Dental Assisting students: Christina Ramirez, Joaquin Ramirez, Mariah Taylor and Erin Vincent. The students told Board members why they chose to enroll at MCC and what they are learning in the Dental Assisting program. The Ramirez siblings said they heard amazing stories about MCC’s Dental Assisting program from recent graduates, and that they are excited about the career possibilities after graduation. Taylor praised Damman and said she’s enjoying the hands-on nature of the program. Vincent, who is from Alaska, said the program’s CODA accreditation was a big draw for her, because she plans to continue to travel after graduation and wants to be certified to work as a dental assistant anywhere in the country.
In other matters, the Board approved contracts and addendums for college level instruction with eight area high schools; a revised FY18 Board annual calendar; FY19 and FY20 academic and holiday calendars; and a 260F Iowa Jobs Training Agreement worth $8,258 to train 18 employees of Metal Tech Industries in Iowa Falls on the topics of safety, quality, leadership and computer skills. The Board also approved an amendment/modification to the WIOA Region 6 Master Agreement with Iowa Workforce Development which added just over $80,200 to the program’s budget.
The Board also accepted several gifts: $1,500 given by the Church Women United of Iowa Falls to the Iowa Falls High School Equivalency Diploma and English as a Second Language programs; a shotgun barrel dent raiser given by Hosford & Co. to the Iowa Valley Grinnell (IVG) Gunsmith Technology program; 200 gunstocks given by Turnbull Mfg. to the IVG Gunsmith Technology program; and materials given by Black Hills Energy to the MCC Natural Gas Technician program.
The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board will be on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 4 pm in Reg Johnson Hall on the Ellsworth Community College campus at 1100 College Ave., Iowa Falls. The Board will also conduct a Board Retreat on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 4 pm in the IVCCD District Administration building, 3702 S. Center St., Marshalltown.
