6th Annual National Poetry Month event at the Orpheum
Monday / April 2, 2018
Marshalltown Community College will celebrate National Poetry Month with “The United State of Poetry” on Monday, April 16, at the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center. The event will include a variety of classical poetry readings beginning at 7 pm.
A few readers are still being recruited, but many will be MCC students. Organizers anticipate that the readers will represent various political, ethnic, vocational, religious and cultural backgrounds. Some readers may read in languages other than English; translations will be provided. This poetry reading is free, and the public is invited to attend.
“The arts are uniquely capable of bringing people together, and this event is guaranteed to celebrate and uplift our collective experiences,” says Carolyn Briggs, MCC Associate Professor of English. “Poetry is meant to be heard, and audiences are always surprised at the intensity, pleasure, and intimacy of listening to poems read aloud.”
“The United State of Poetry” is sponsored by the MCC Humanities Division. Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April when schools, publishers, libraries, book sellers and poets throughout the United States band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. The IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center is located at 220 E. Main St., Marshalltown.
