Facility repairs move forward for Ellsworth Community College

The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors approved low bids for window replacement and reroofing of Thompson Hall at Ellsworth Community College when it met this week in special session. Thompson Hall is a men’s dormitory built in 1972.

For window replacement, the Board accepted the low bid of $172,000 for fiberglass windows, which was a base bid alternate. The low bidder with Smith Gehrls of Iowa Falls, and the bid was under the architect’s estimate of $179,000 for 115 windows. It was noted that the fiberglass windows will be more durable and stable than aluminum, with better thermal properties.

Also related to Thompson Hall, the Board approved a low bid of $149,875 for reroofing from Skyline Construction of Lincoln, NE. The architect’s estimate for the project was $177,310. Both the window replacement and reroofing will be completed before students return to campus for classes in the fall.

Building repairs at Reg Johnson Hall on the ECC campus were also advanced as the Board approved the plans, specifications, form of contract, and estimated costs for HVAC equipment replacement and masonry repairs on that building. No comments were received during a public hearing on the projects, and bids for the two projects will be opened on Tuesday, April 23, at 2 pm and 3 pm, respectively, in the ECC Gentle Student Center (Caroline Hall Board Room); bids will be considered for approval at the May 8 Board meeting in Marshalltown. It was noted that the masonry work on Reg Johnson may be split over two summers if it can’t be completed during the time when classes are out of session, because of the noise involved.

The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board will be on Wednesday, April 10, at 4 pm in Reg Johnson Hall (room 100) on the ECC campus in Iowa Falls.
