Board approves MCC roof repairs

The Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Board of Directors met in special session on Nov. 1 to approve a bid for partial roof replacement at Marshalltown Community College. Four bids were received, and the Board approved the low bid of $171,150 from Academy Roofing & Sheet Metal of Des Moines.
The project engineer’s estimate for the construction cost was $147,150, but it was reported that the contractors will have to remove roofing materials that include asbestos, which added to the total project cost.
Chris Bland, Supervisor of Plant Services on the Iowa Valley/MCC campus, said the roof repair will be over the MCC kitchen, student union and bookstore areas, as well as offices, restrooms and classes near the intersection of MCC’s 300 and 400 hallways. The current roofing material was installed in 1994 on top of the original roof, and there are multiple leaks over that entire area.
Bland said the work will begin as soon as possible, weather permitting.
