IVCCD approves job training projects with RACOM & Bruin Manufacturing

Job training agreements with RACOM Corporation and Bruin Manufacturing were approved when the Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) Board of Directors met this week.

Business Outreach Coordinators Neysa Hartzler and Valerie Ruff told the Board that they’ve been meeting and building relationships with many area employers since being hired just a few months ago. The 260F agreement with RACOM is Iowa Valley’s first with that Marshalltown company, which designs large-scale public safety communication networks; the $7,116 RACOM project will train 59 employees on OSHA 10. Iowa Valley’s last 260F training agreement with Bruin Manufacturing, which does custom plastic injection molding, was in 2006. The new $15,094 Bruin project will train 33 employees on safety and process technician requirements.

A 15-minute presentation on Vision Marshalltown was given by Kyley Leger (VM Executive Director) and Terry Buzbee (VM Board Member). Buzbee told the IVCCD Board about Vision Marshalltown’s focus on growth and community progress, citing several projects from the recent past, efforts currently under way, and efforts planned for the near future. Leger shared the organization’s new 2019-2021 strategic plan and updated mission statement and values. She described Vision Marshalltown’s growth strategies, which focus on housing, education, downtown development, and community pride/reputation.

A presentation was also given on the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) strategic plan and legislative priorities. Presenters M.J. Dolan (IACCT Executive Director) and Denise Hollonbeck (IACCT Board Chair) talked about the importance of building relationships with state lawmakers and encouraged IVCCD Board members to be involved in the lobbying process.

During action items, the IVCCD Board approved:

  • A clean and unmodified audit report from Schnurr and Company on the District’s 2018-2019 finances;
  • voluntary early retirement plan applications from Robin Anctil (IVCCD Marketing Director) and Mary Means (MCC Welding Faculty);
  • contracts for college-level instruction for high school students at BCLUW, Green Mountain/Garwin, East Marshall, Grinnell-Newburg and West Marshall School District; and
  • renewal of a lease agreement with Marshall County Arts & Culture Alliance for office space at the Orpheum Theater Center at 220 E. Main St. in Marshalltown.

The Board accepted several gifts, including plants valued at $1,150 given by Jennie VanGundy to the MCC Biology Department; a $1,076 donation from Scenic City Area Retired Teachers for Iowa Falls ESL/HSED student scholarships for materials and tuition; and a $77 donation from George Johnson for a raffle for the MCC Students for Peace & Social Justice Club.

The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board will be Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 4 pm in the District Administration Building at 3702 S. Center St. in Marshalltown..
