Iowa Valley announces COVID-19 related updates

Administrators, faculty and staff at Iowa Valley Community College District (including Ellsworth Community College, Marshalltown Community College, Iowa Valley Grinnell, and Iowa Valley Continuing Education) spent today discussing and planning a response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) virus pandemic. As a result, the following decisions have been made and are being communicated this evening to all students and staff:

Face-to-face classes at Ellsworth CC, Marshalltown CC and Iowa Valley Grinnell will be cancelled until Monday, March 23. At that time, nearly all of the classes will be moved to a virtual, technology-assisted platform using any combination of either a fully online Blackboard tool or a hybrid version using Zoom videoconferencing through the remainder of the semester.

A limited group of identified lab courses that do not lend themselves to virtual learning will be suspended for four weeks until Monday, April 13, or until it is recommended that group gatherings are able to resume per state and federal guidance. Students directly affected by this situation will be contacted by their instructors to inform them of this change and to discuss if any lecture components will be taught virtually during the lab hiatus.

Previously online courses or courses that have been taught online all semester will resume on Wednesday, March 15. Students should check their iavalley.edu email and Blackboard daily for specific course correspondence from their faculty.

Additional guidance for college courses being taught in the local high schools will be provided in the coming days.

Continuing Education Classes

All Iowa Valley Continuing Education classes are cancelled until Monday, April 13. Watch for additional guidance on court-mandated classes, as Iowa community colleges are waiting for guidance from the State of Iowa.

Campus Access & Services

The campuses will remain open for services, but students are encouraged to use email or phone contact when possible. Additional campus services will be moving online over the next few days.

No minor children (unless they are a registered MCC or ECC student) will be allowed on the campuses in order to support social distancing efforts.

Campus computer lab hours and access will remain the same at all locations.

Housing & Food Service

Student housing and food service will remain open for students who wish to remain on campus. Given the changes in class format, many students may wish to move out of the dorms over the coming days/weeks to minimize social contact in close quarters. At the same time, there may be extenuating circumstances that prevent some students from leaving campus at this time. There will be staff on the campuses to ensure that residence buildings are being supervised and thoroughly cleaned to minimize any possible concerns. Food services will remain open to serve students in campus housing.

Athletics

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has cancelled all spring competitions, including those for Ellsworth Community College and Marshalltown Community College, for the remainder of the academic year, effective March 16, 2020. Spring competition includes all practices, regular season, post season, and national championship play.

Spring sport student-athletes enrolled in 2020 will not be charged with a year of participation. Student-athletes should check their Iowa Valley email regularly for updates from coaches.

Events

All events at all locations are cancelled until April 13, 2020.

College-Sponsored Travel for Students & Employees

There will be no college-sponsored international travel thru June 30, 2020 and no non-essential out-of-state travel until May 30, 2020. All in-state travel should be discussed and approved campus leadership until April 13, 2020.

“It was a very busy day on our campuses as faculty, staff and administrators met to discuss and make recommendations about a number of important issues related to the COVID-19 situation,” said Dr. Kristie Fisher, IVCCD Chancellor. “We remain committed to supporting our students’ educational journey and helping them succeed in and outside of the classroom. We are making every effort at this point to ensure that the classes they’re currently taking, the work they’ve done already this semester, and their ultimate educational goals (including graduation) can still be met. We are also deeply committed to protecting everyone’s health and well-being. We are following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), the Iowa Department of Public Health, and county experts as we work our way through this uncharted territory of COVID-19.”

Copies of all news releases, as well as emails to all employees and all students, are posted online at https://www.iavalley.edu/about-the-district/covid-19-updates/.
