Interview Prep Checklist: 7 Things to Know Before the Interview

You have found the job that you are hoping to land and want to make the best impression you can. Here are seven helpful things to know before your big interview.

Know the company

It’s easy to do a little research about the company where you will be interviewing. Take some time and look at their websites, social media and any information you can find online. This will not only give you extra insight into what and who they are, but will also help you with any questions you may have. It’s also a great way to show them that you are interested in the job.

Questions will come up during the interview that you may be able to answer in more detail with what you find.

Preparation is the key

Make sure to take any material that you think may help “sell” yourself to them. Take extra resumes, and be prepared to share them with your interviewer.. Some companies may ask for this information even if you have already submitted it. It’s also a great thing to have on hand in case anyone that you are interviewing with hasn’t seen it.

If you are applying for a job that you have already created projects or have experience in, make sure to bring a portfolio to show off what you have done. This is an easy way for them to see that you are already able to do some of the job that they want to hire you for.

Dress the part

Those holes in your jeans may look great hanging out with friends but it won’t impress the boss.

Take some time to think about what you will be wearing for the interview. If you dress to impress they will notice. Make sure to wear appropriate clothing such as dress pants, a button up shirt or nice blouse or a dress. Leave the tennis shoes at home and show up with your hair done and all cleaned up. It may seem like a simple thing but again…it will be noticed.

Where and when

Make sure you find out all of the details about what time you need to show up for your interview and where you are going. It’s okay to ask questions to clarify. The company will prefer that you show up in the right place at the right time. Show them that this is something that will transfer into your job when they hire you.

It also okay to impress them with showing up a little early too. You will show them that you are eager for the position as well as reliable.

Know the job

You applied for the position so obviously, something caught your eye in the job description but make sure you go back and look it over. It’s good to incorporate aspects of the position in answers that the interviewers may ask you. They know what they are looking for so use that information to your advantage.

They will have questions for you….what questions do you have for them?

A big part of any interview is either a committee or people asking you questions. What do you want to know about the company or position you are applying to? Make sure you take some time to think about what you need to know to make a decision. Sure they are interviewing you but it’s also your choice if you want to take the job when it’s offered.

Be ready for their questions

A big part of job interviews is getting to know you. Job interviews will include questions about your skills, work history and more about who you are. Be prepared to talk about these things. It’s okay to sell yourself. That is really what a job interview is. Take some time to look up commonly asked questions, think about what you can provide in this work environment.

The first job interview you go on may not be “the one” but that’s okay. Make sure you are prepared for every interview that you enter and the job you are looking for and want will happen. Be patient and always be prepared.
