Jim is a native Hoosier from Evansville, IN, although his roots are in Kentucky. He received a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Mississippi State University and a master’s in Poultry Science with a minor in Reproductive Physiology, also from MSU. Despite being warned about Iowa winters, he moved to Iowa to get a Ph.D. in Zoology from Iowa State University, the second-to-last Zoology Ph.D. ever from ISU. A research physiologist by trade, Jim began working at Ellsworth in 2006, teaching Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology; advising the Pre-Medicine, Pre-Mortuary Science, and Pre-Physical Therapy programs; and occasionally assisting with the Pre-Nursing program. He was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Student’s Choice Award for the top faculty member in 2014, and is active in the Iowa Association of Community College Biology Teachers. Jim loves hiking and camping, drumming around a campfire, star-gazing, and dressing in garb for Renaissance festivals.
