IVCCD holds public hearing on MCC roof repairs

The IVCCD Board of Directors held a public hearing on the plans, specifications, form of contract and estimated cost for repairs to the east roof on the Marshalltown Community College campus when it met this week. With no objections received, the bids on the project will be opened Oct. 30 at 10 am in Marshalltown and approved at a special Board meeting on Nov. 1.

It was reported that the MCC roof repairs are expected to cost about $147,150 plus $11,000 in fees to structural engineering contractor Clapsaddle-Garber Associates. MCC Plant Services Supervisor Chris Bland said that the project should be straightforward based on preliminary inspections. The Notice to Bidders is posted on the IVCCD website at

The IVCCD Board also approved a resolution instituting proceedings to take additional action for the issuance of not to exceed $5 million Industrial New Jobs Training Certificates for training with Lennox Industries and JBS in Marshalltown. The Lennox and JBS training projects have been discussed during the past two Board meetings as the projects have progressed. In related action, the Board approved resolutions to direct the sale and delivery of $4.79 million Industrial New Jobs Training Certificates and authorizing issuance of those certificates.

Maggie Burger of Speer Financial said bids were received for the $4.79 million taxable Industrial New Jobs Training Certificates, and the bid of a 1.9935% interest rate from Piper Jaffray & Co. of Minneapolis, MN, was awarded.

In other matters, the Board approved the following:

  • Certificates of substantial completion for window replacement at Thompson Hall, HVAC equipment replacement and upgrades at Reg Johnson Hall and reroofing at Thompson Hall, all on the Ellsworth Community College campus in Iowa Falls.
  • A one-year agreement with Jami Stupp and Corey Larson for overseeing emergency services training offered through Iowa Valley Continuing Education.
  • Modification of the District’s WIOA master agreement adding $107,947 to the WIOA Youth, Adult & Dislocated Worker Program.
  • Contracts for snow removal service in Grinnell (Hotchkin & Son Construction), Iowa Falls (Winters Septic Service) and Marshalltown (Top Notch Tree Service).

MCC international students & programs

Vickie Unferth, MCC Coordinator of International Students & Programs, gave a presentation on MCC’s international students. She said MCC current enrolls 64 international students representing 17 countries. Three-fourths of the international students are student-athletes, and their reasons for choosing Marshalltown Community College vary widely … the most common are athletics, affordability, and learning English. Unferth says that all seven of the Chinese students at MCC transferred from Iowa State University. The international students get together for shopping, sightseeing, cultural events, and a Sunday meal each week.

International students Juhee Kwon of South Korea, Andjela Bobic of Serbia, Oswald Moodie of Jamaica and Gabriel Dias of Brazil told Board members why they chose MCC and what they liked best about Marshalltown. All four plan to transfer to continue their academic and athletic careers at four-year universities.

There will be a special IVCCD Board meeting Nov. 1 at 3 pm in Marshalltown and a Board Retreat on Nov. 6 at 4 pm in Marshalltown. The next regular meeting of the IVCCD Board will be Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 4 pm in Reg Johnson Hall (room 100) on the Ellsworth Community College campus at 1100 College Ave., Iowa Falls.
