IVCCD Board Report – July 8 Meeting
Friday / July 10, 2020
MARSHALLTOWN – The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors reviewed the college catalog, now in an online format. The course catalogs for both Marshalltown Community College and Ellsworth Community College are available on the website. The course catalogs provide information on all associate of arts and career and technical programs of study including fourteen new transfer majors designed for ease of transfer to the regent universities. Students are able to search using a variety of methods including career interest, course descriptions, and program names based on course descriptions, or select from an alphabetized list.
Board members also reviewed updates to the Student Handbook, which outlines the code of conduct for students enrolled in classes at the district. The handbook outlines college policies/guidelines and student engagement information. This year, the guidelines were updated to provide more detail around Title IX regulations. The guidelines are applied to people studying both in-person and online. The handbook is available online.
Board Learns About Academic and Non-Academic Assessments
The IVCCD Board heard a progress report on the Academic Assessment, which is guided by the mission, vision and values. Academic assessment teams have reviewed academic programs on the credit side. The focus is on shifting the culture from teaching and placing greater emphasis on student learning, keeping student outcomes at the forefront when creating plans.
The Board also learned about IVCCD’s new Non-Academic Assessment process which assesses operational effectiveness of systems and processes and uses results for decision-making and continuous quality improvement. Departmental assessment projects are tied to IVCCD’s Strategic Agenda Initiatives. While the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on several departments’ ability to complete their projects this year, 38 improvement types were identified and action plans were developed to make those improvements.
