OPN Architects Reviews Renovation Plans With IVCCD Board
MARSHALLTOWN – The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors heard information about the upcoming renovation at Marshalltown Community College, Ellsworth Community College, and Iowa Valley Grinnell by the OPN Architects out of Des Moines. The overall focus for the projects are improving the student experience and student outcomes. The proposed changes will also improve the safety and security of the campuses overall.
At the Marshalltown campus, there will be a blend of work to the interior structures and exterior projects. Work will begin on expanding the library, updating the Student Success Center, and a computer lab. Additionally, work will be done to add visibility to the campus, exterior entrances, improving the safety of the walkways, and roofing repairs.
The work on the Ellsworth campus will focus on adding housing for students, maximizing the usability and ADA/accessibility for students. Work will also be done at the Ditmer gym, renovating and remodeling the existing pool area into an open activity center.
Iowa Valley Grinnell is looking to add a vestibule for the gunsmithing program, creating a separate entrance for people in the program.
Board Learns of Proposed Technology Solutions
The Board also learned of the planned technology upgrades. In reviewing current technology, 9 of the existing 15 servers are at end-of-life stage, so the college is taking this opportunity to invest in Nutanix technology solutions. The solution will combine servers and storage, provide disaster recovery, and add redundancy to the existing server system. The solution will also add a Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) capability, allowing students the ability to access specialty software traditionally found in on-campus labs from anywhere using any device.
Board Learns of Grant Award
The Board learned the Iowa Valley Community College District has been selected to receive funding through the U.S. Department of Education for the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program. The funding, shared in the form of a grant, will be received over a five-year period running through the 2024-2025 academic year. This is the 3rd SSS grant approval for both campuses with their programs originally starting in 2010.
Board Heard Details About Agreement Between Orpheum and Marshall County and Iowa Courts
Marshall County and the Iowa Courts have entered into an agreement with Iowa Valley Community College District to use the Orpheum Theater for overflow court proceedings. The agreement will begin July 22 and run through December 2020.
Board Approves Career Readiness Counselor
The Board approved an agreement between Marshalltown Community School District and Iowa Valley Community College District to jointly employ and share the services of a College and Career Readiness Counselor. This is a three-year agreement ending June 30, 2023, with IVCCD contributing 20 percent of the salary and benefits.
Board Learns of Storm Remediation
A severe wind storm ripped through central Iowa on Monday, August 11, causing damage to the Iowa Valley Community College District campuses. Before the storm was over, Plant Services was working to line up contractors for the roof repairs and additional storm remediation. Because of quick action, fall classes are scheduled to begin on time on August 24.

The Board learned about adjustments being made for the fall semester to address COVID-19. The college has made plans that allow for social distancing and has published guidelines for face coverings while on campus. Updated plans can be found on the website.
