Understanding Your Financial Aid Options

Our goal is to empower you to achieve your educational dreams without the stress of financial barriers. We offer various financial aid options, and our dedicated financial aid team is here to support you in finding the best financial solutions to fit your needs.

Financial aid comes in several forms, including grants, loans, and scholarships. Many of these options require you to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Ways to Pay for College

Federal grants are "gift aid" that you do not have to pay back. They are often need-based and can be a cornerstone of your financial aid package.

This is a need-based grant. For the 2026-2027 academic year (July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027), the maximum Pell Grant is $7,395. The actual amount you receive is determined by a standard formula set by Congress. To apply, you must complete the FAFSA.

This program provides up to $400 per academic year to students with exceptional financial need. Awards are limited by available funds. To apply, you must complete the FAFSA.

Federal Direct Student Loans are low-interest loans from the federal government designed to help you cover educational expenses. These loans must be repaid.

For eligible students, the federal government pays the interest on the loan while you are enrolled at least half-time (six credit hours) and during a six-month grace period after leaving college. The fixed interest rate for loans disbursed after July 1, 2026, is 6.52% for the life of the loan.

These loans are available to students regardless of financial need. You are responsible for all interest that accrues during any enrollment, grace, or deferment period. The fixed interest rate for loans disbursed after July 1, 2026, is 6.52% for the life of the loan.

  • Borrowing Limits: Dependent students enrolled full-time can borrow a maximum of $5,500 (subsidized/unsubsidized combined) during their freshman year and $6,500 during their sophomore year (after earning 28 credits).
  • Independent Students: If you are an independent student and not required to provide parent information on the FAFSA, you may be eligible to borrow an additional $4,000 under the unsubsidized loan program.

This loan is available directly to parents of dependent students to help pay college expenses. It can cover up to the student's cost of attendance minus any other financial aid. The interest rate is fixed at 9.07% for loans disbursed after July 1, 2026. Loan proceeds are distributed to Iowa Valley.

Various organizations offer private student loans. A simple web search for "Private Education Loans in Iowa" can provide you with a list of these organizations.

The state of Iowa offers several grants for eligible Iowa residents, administered by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission (Iowa College Aid). The general deadline for filing your FAFSA to be eligible for state grants is July 1st of each year for the following award year, though some programs have specific deadlines.

This need-based grant helps Iowa residents enrolled in specific career or technical education programs of at least 15 weeks. You must have a Student Aid Index (SAI) of $0-$6,000 and meet the July 15th FAFSA filing deadline. Awards range from $200 to $3,000 based on your SAI and enrollment.

Iowa residents in career or technical education programs at Iowa community colleges may be eligible. Grants range from $100 to $1,200 per academic year, based on your SAI and credits enrolled. You must show financial need, be in a Vocational Technical program of at least 15 weeks, have an SAI of $201-$6,800, and meet the July 15th deadline.

Administered by Iowa College Aid, federal funding up to $5,000 per year is available through the Education and Training Voucher (ETV) Program for qualifying applicants. This includes students aged 16-26 who age out of Iowa's foster care system or Subsidized Guardianship program, or those adopted from Iowa foster care after age 16. You must complete the FAFSA and an Iowa College Aid application.

IVCCD offers a variety of on-campus employment opportunities for students. The Federal Work-Study program is available to students who qualify based on financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. The Institutional Work-Study program is designed for students who do not meet federal eligibility requirements. Both programs provide part-time, on-campus positions, with students typically working up to 10 hours per week and earning the current federal minimum wage.
