Learn English at Your Own Pace
No matter your native language, you can learn English through our English Language Learners (ELL) classes. Classes are interactive, supportive, and offered at every level — from beginner to advanced. Our lessons cover speaking, reading, listening, and writing, and students encourage each other along the way.
ELL classes are open to people from any country or culture and are available in multiple communities across Central Iowa, as well as online. Classes are free or low-cost, and all ability levels are welcome.

Join live ELL classes from anywhere with an internet connection. Online classes are synchronous — taught in real time by an instructor. They are not self-paced, so you'll need to log in and take part during the scheduled class times below. Also note: you will still need to regiister in person with us for the online course options.

How to Register
Call 641-754-1348 or email ivetc@iavalley.edu to register for an online section. You'll need a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone and a reliable internet connection.
Clases en Línea (Sincrónicas)

How to Register
You'll need to register in person at one of our locations, or by phone or email if you're joining an online class.
Step 1: Contact Us
Call 641-754-1348 or email ivetc@iavalley.edu to let us know you're interested. You can also walk in during registration hours at any of our locations.
Step 2: Bring Identification
You will need to provide eligibility documentation when you register.
Identity (who you are):
- U.S. driver's license or state-issued ID
- U.S. passport or passport card
- Foreign passport
- Consular ID (matrícula consular)
- School-issued photo ID
Eligibility (authorization to participate in federally funded programs): Accepted documents include:
- U.S. birth certificate or certificate of citizenship
- U.S. passport or passport card
- Permanent resident card (green card)
- Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
- Form I-94 with "Parole" notation valid for one year or more
- Refugee or asylee documentation
- Certain visa categories that establish lawful presence

Step 3: Pay for the Class
Each eight-week term costs $20. We can accept cash, check, or credit/debit card.
Step 4: Complete the Assessment
You'll take reading and listening assessments so we can place you in the right class level. There are no wrong answers — this just helps us figure out where you'll learn best. These assessments can take two hours in total to complete.
Step 5: Choose Your Class Schedule
After your assessment, we'll help you pick a class time and location that works for you.
